Give Dad a real thrill for Father’s Day—take him whitewater rafting in the Smokies on your vacation to Tennessee. Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg both offer a perfect home base for this exciting sport. No more wondering what to give dad—here’s is an experience he’ll always remember.
The Pigeon River has two sections, each of which provides a completely different experience. The upper section has twelve Class 3 rapids, and three Class 4s, meaning they are ranked in the moderate to high level of the system which ranks rapids from easy (1) to difficult (5).
The lower section of the Pigeon is better for smaller children, seniors, and those just wanting an easy water experience. It’s more or less like a float trip, with only one rapid in the lower section. Paddlers barely need a paddle for this smooth ride.
Dad can enjoy having the whole family along if desired; each boat holds seven people plus the guide. Everyone needs to wear clothing that can get wet, and secure shoes with a heel strap or back on them. Sunscreen is always a good idea, too, as are dark glasses and a secure hat.
Rafting will take up a good portion of a fun-filled day, as it usually takes groups about an hour to make it down the river. So strap on your lifejacket and head out for a adventure down the Pigeon! Rafting the Smokies will make for a Father’s Day that Dad will never forget!
