If you’re looking into a golf vacation in Virginia, few settings are prettier than Central Virginia. These rolling lands just east of the Shenandoah Valley lend parcels of their lush beauty to golf layouts that challenge players of every experience level.
Here are three fine Central Virginia golf courses that might be the right fit for yours.
The Greens at Tanyard
The Greens at Tanyard Golf Club, on Main Street in charming downtown Louisa, is fairly accommodating from the white tees, and has just enough woods and water to keep the interest of stronger players. The par-72 layout plays 6,500 yards from the back gold tees, but even then you won’t need a driver on all the par-4s. You will need a reliable short game, though.
No matter your strengths or ability level, you’re always welcome at Tanyard, where management prides itself on providing family-friendly experiences. You get discounts by booking your tee time on online at the club’s website, in some cases up to 40% depending on the day of the week and time.
Tanyard is about 30 miles due east of Charlottesville and 60 miles northwest of Richmond.
Spring Creek Golf Club, a course within a gated residential community near Gordonsville but open to the public, plays over 7,300 yards from the back tees and presents risks and rewards characteristic of a tournament-style course. Long hitters have to be accurate, as fairways increasingly narrow; but good placement also adds extra run on drives that land on what designer Ed Carton calls “speed slots.”
Less-experienced players and shorter hitters will find their own delights and challenges as they traverse the heavily wooded layout. Before the round, everyone stands to benefit from one of the best practice facilities in the area, including a bentgrass driving range, practice bunker, short-game area and putting green. After the round, everyone is welcome at The Tavern to enjoy a menu that includes specialty sandwiches, wraps and other selections far above average clubhouse fare.
Spring Creek is about 15 minutes east-southeast of Charlottesville.
Meadowcreek Golf Course, inside Charlottesville’s city limits, is a 155-acre feast for your eyes even you experience a birdie famine on your round. The greenery of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the distance combine with the oaks, cherry trees and flowering dogwoods on the course imbue Meadowcreek with an unmistakable sense of place—pure Central Virginia. You might even catch a fawn or two skipping along.
As for the challenge, the course presents more than the average municipal track. It plays just 6,200 yards from the back tees—it’s par 71— but the mixture of long and short holes makes it enjoyable for all players.
Selected one of the “Best Places to Play” by Golf Digest magazine, Meadowcreek also features a full-service pro shop, a driving range and a grill with an outdoor patio.
If you’re hunting for great golf experiences in Central Virginia, try one or more of these three course. They’re all satisfying—each for different reasons.
