Try Serendipity 3 in NYC

On your next New York City vacation, plan a visit to Serendipity 3, which is part store and part restaurant. It is one of Manhattan’s best eateries, a Tiffany lamp-filled gem on the Upper East Side where in-the-know New Yorkers have gone for memorable meals and drinks since 1954. There is something for everyone on the menu, whether you’re showing up for brunch, lunch, dinner or simply some of the finest desserts in New York City.

It is a unique place to dine. Celebrities like Marilyn Monroe, Bette Davis, Andy Warhol, and Jackie Kennedy all have visited Serendipity 3 once upon a time. It’s been featured in movies like “One Fine Day” and “Serendipity,” along with TV shows like “Gossip Girl.”

There is not only history and lots of hype, but a menu filled with a wide range of choices, with entertaining names to boot. Options include the Madame Butterfly, featuring farfalle pasta with sautéed artichoke hearts, asparagus and sliced red peppers, tossed in a garlic cheese sauce. Or how about the Shake, Batter & Bowl, where they take a half chicken, deep fry and oven roast it, and serve it with French fries.

The Golden Opulence SundaeYou have got to check out Serendipity 3’s extensive menu. It is a place where you can opt for simple items like their popular foot-long hot dogs, or try a sophisticated twist on a classic American favorite, the Caviar Burger, served with sour cream and cucumber slices, if you are looking for something new. Guests can also share appetizers like nachos or wings, or order soups, sandwiches, or entrees for themselves.  The heartier eater in the group can indulge in the Mixed Grill, featuring charbroiled Romanian Steak, honey chicken and Cajun sausage with grilled peppers and onions, while the health conscious can enjoy fresh fruit with cottage. American comfort foods fill the menu such as meatloaf, chicken Pot Pie and Shepherd’s Pie.

But let’s talk about what really gets diners coming back time and time again; dessert. The drinks and desserts do not disappoint. There are hot specialty coffee drinks, but everyone’s buzzing about the Frrrozen Hot Chocolate, served thick and rich, topped with whipped cream and chocolate shavings, and straws for splitting. There are even options like Peanut Butter Frrrozen Hot Chocolate or Frrrozen Pineapple Lime to try. There are also sweets galore to end the meal right, like the Big Apple Pie, Chocolate Blackout Cake, or YuDuFunDu, featuring fruit and fudge.

The desserts come in big portions and are a chocolate lover’s delight. Serendipity 3 even set a Guinness World Record, offering the world largest hot chocolate, as well as the most expensive sundaes. The Golden Opulence Sundae is priced at a whopping $1,000 and has to be requested two days in advance! It features 5 scoops of Tahitian vanilla bean ice cream and is drizzled with the world’s most expensive chocolate, along with plenty of candy, fruit, and Grand Passion Caviar, all served in a crystal bowl and eaten with gold and pearl spoons. For the braver diners, make sure to ask about the Outrageous Banana Split. How outrageous is it? Well, the sundae is covered with not- so-typical toppings like chocolate-covered ants and crickets.

Serendipity 3's Frrrozen Hot ChocolateBefore you leave, make sure to bring home a memento from your visit, since there is plenty for sale at this restaurant and store. You can even order the house hot chocolate mix, chocolate bars, and other Serendipity 3 items online, but nothing beats trying their treats for yourself, in person.

When planning your visit, also remember patience is a virtue when dining at Serendipity 3. It’s New York City, after all, and Serendipity 3 is a cozy place with long waits and limited reservations. But your patience and persistence will be rewarded.
