If you want to see a lot of Savannah in short period of time, you can take a trolley tour. If you want a vacation activity there that really gets your heart pumping, take a ghost tour. But if you want to accomplish both simultaneously, then enter the Rock ’n’ Roll Savannah Marathon or Half-Marathon.
What better way is there to ensure a personal best vacation than to record a personal best time? Runners from across the country evidently find that notion appealing. The inaugural marathon in 2011 drew 15,000 entries and the shorter race drew 23,000, making it the biggest first-time half-marathon in the United States, it’s continued to grow.
The annual event is part of an international series of marathons and a fundraiser for participating charities. Get a head start by registering online. More on that later.
The first half of the flat, 26-mile marathon course, and the entirety of the half-marathon course, takes runners through the Historic District and other nearby locales of the first planned city in the United States. The altered full-marathon course is more concentrated in Savannah’s central neighborhoods than last year. It sends runners through beautiful Gordonston, Savannah’s oldest suburb and a historic district itself, and then circles the campus at Savannah State University.
The course not only is scenic, it also is fairly flat. That alone makes it appealing to less-experienced runners and walkers. But that’s only part of why more and more runners are circling the Savannah date on their calendars. This being part of the Rock ’n’ Roll Series, the amenities combine with the natural course ambiance to make it a must.
What amenities, you ask? In the Rock ’n’ Roll Series, runners and walkers pass one live local band after another as they race. The bands, representing all genres, will be positioned along the course to provide nonstop musical motivation, assisted in the “atta-boy!” department by local high school cheer groups.
And it all culminates with a free finish line concert after the race.
Then there’s the fundraising element to the event. If you’re looking to join the cause, you can run or support an affiliated runner.
You can register online where you also can get complete information about the event as well as important updates. Just don’t forget the entry deadline.
Any vacation to Savannah is fun, but if you’re there for the Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon and Half-Marathon, you can get your fun on the run.
