Savannah, Ga., is known for many things. The lush, green public squares. The cobblestoned riverfront. The Southern warmth and hospitality.
Oh, yeah. And the ghosts.
Legends abound of indentured slaves, wounded Civil War soldiers and other sundry spirits who have made their eternal homes in paranormal hangouts all over the city.
The best way to learn about the spooky side of Savannah is to take a ghost tour.
Savannah Ghost Tour Suggestions
Ghosts & Gravestones Savannah Frightseeing Tour
Ghosts & Gravestones Savannah Frightseeing Tour: Board the open-air Trolley of the Doomed for this 75-minute nighttime tour that originates on River Street and takes you to all the favorite haunts in the Savannah Historic District’s ghost community. An expert in the ethereal will narrate your tour.
You’ll learn about all about the haunted, mansions, inns and bars along your route. You’ll actually step off the trolley—if you’re not too scared—for a walking tour of Colonial Park Cemetery. The gruesome graveyard dates to 1750 and is the final resting place for the losers when duels to the death were a way of life in 18th- and 19th-century Savannah. Some of the duels actually took place in or near the cemetery.
You’ll also stop for an exclusive dramatic presentation at one of Savannah’s most foreboding locales, the Perkins and Sons Ship Chandlery on River Street. An eerie array of special effects will enhance the costumed re-enactment of the building’s haunted history.
Savannah Candlelight Walking Tours
Savannah Candlelight Walking Tours: This company offers two options, the Haunted History Tour and the adults-only (sorry, kids!) Haunted Pub Crawl.
The Haunted History Tour convenes twice nightly at the not-so-pearly gates of Colonial Park Cemetery. You’ll learn all about the spirit orbs believed to frequent the graveyard. Who knows? One might even turn up for a photograph, so don’t forget your camera. As the tour moves along, you’ll learn from your licensed guide the stories behind all of Savannah’s ghostly gatherings.
You’ll hear tales from the tumultuous history of a city scourged by the American Revolution, Civil War and tragic Yellow Fever outbreaks. You’ll hear yarns of tragedy and treachery along one of the most legendary seaports in the United States. By the end of the tour, you’ll truly understand why Savannah’s reputation is well-earned.
You can delve a little deeper into the seaport specter scene on the Haunted Pub Crawl. After all, what’s an old seaport bar without a resident ghost tale—or a resident ghost?
The tour sets out twice each night, once from Moon River Brewery and once from Molly McPherson’s. Are you allowed to drink on this tour? Well, let’s just say spirits are optional—unless you bump into one.
Tara Tours: Tara Tours likewise presents points of paranormal interest on foot.
The “City of the Dead” tour explores Colonial Park Cemetery’s lurid history and hits all the other haunted high points of the Historic District. The “Boos and Brews” tour is a bone-chilling bar hop along all of the usual “haunts.” Grab a to-go cup and let the Poltergeist partying commence.
You might already know of Tara Tours. Tara Ryan is a seventh-generation Savannah-ite whose team has been featured on such TV shows as Syfy’s Ghost Hunters International, TLC’s Ghost Intervention and A&E’s My Ghost Story.
As you can see, you have a lot of options for ghost tours in Savannah. So take a tour. C’mon … get with the spirits!
