Grab your Pops … and your clubs
The sprawling World Golf Village campus includes two championship golf courses, the Slammer & Squire and the King & Bear. Both par-72 layouts offer five sets of tees and have consistently received 4- to 5-star ratings by Golf Digest. Both courses are exquisite, as would be expected based on the bodies of work of those who collaborated on their designs.
The newer and longer of the two, the King & Bear, was designed by Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. Almost 7,300 yards and a few minutes southwest of the campus hub, it actually has the feel of two separate courses. The front nine is open, much like a links course. The back side, thick with oaks and pines, looks more the part of a north Florida course.
The shorter course, the Slammer & Squire, is the work of Pete Dye protege Bobby Weed in consultation with two legends whose primes preceded those of Arnie and Jack: Sam “The Slammer” Snead and Gene “The Squire” Sarazen. Opened in 1998 in the heart World Golf Village, the Slammer & Squire plays at just under 7,000 yards and winds through glorious wetlands.
Each course offers a challenging golf experience that you and Dad will truly cherish. But the courses are only a portion of the golf experience at World Golf Village. You’ll find golf-themed shopping and restaurants, an almost unparalleled teaching and practice facility, an IMAX® theater and, of course, the World Golf Hall of Fame.
If the “dad” in your life enjoys playing and immersing himself in golf, then a weekend at World Golf Village, maybe part of a larger St. Augustine vacation, is the best club you could pull from your Father’s Day bag.
