About the Fat Canary

The name Fat Canary comes from the poem by Colonial playwright John Lyly. “Oh for a bowl of fat Canary, rich Palermo, sparkling sherry, some nectar else, from Juno’s dairy; Oh these draughts would make us merry!” it read. What this poem refers to is when ships sailed from the Old World to the New, they had made stops for necessary supplies in the Canary Islands, which included picking up some wine, or as they called it then “Canary.” The name "Fat Canary" is fitting for this Williamsburg restaurant, since wine is aplenty, with a satisfying list to choose from. Fat Canary's wine by the glass menu is constantly changing to include perfectly picked wines to pair with the dinner menu.
Wine and Dine at the Fat Canary

Guests can savor the wine at the long Fat Canary bar or with dinner any night of the week in the intimate dining area. The open kitchen allows guests to watch as their fresh, classic American cuisine is created. Fat Canary also boasts an outdoor seating area for warmer evenings. If you're taking a vacation in the spring, we highly recommend taking advantage of the outdoor venue.
Fat Canary has a great seasonal menu and is updated daily, with appetizers, salads, soups and entrees for all to enjoy. Previous options have included the Arugula and Frisee salad with Pears, Gorgonzola, and an Aged Balsamic. Crispy Virginia Soft Shell Crab with Roasted Chili Butter, Sweet Onion, Cilantro and Tomato Salad was also a great appetizer to start with. Entrees such as the Braised Boneless Beef Short Ribs were served with Wild Mushrooms, Farro and Brussels Sprouts, while the Pan Seared Sea Scallops & Mussels with Shiitake Mushrooms included a Rapini, Miso Broth and Crispy Pork Belly. Guests also noshed on Free-Range Pheasant with Gnocchi, Chanterelles, Apricots, Butternut Squash and Pancetta as well.
