In France, the motherland of design at the turn of the 19th century, Art Nouveau was becoming passé. It was time for a new design standard. By the 1920s, it was flourishing. They called it Art Moderne, but we gave it the Art Deco name when it came across the Atlantic and found a home in the U.S. In New York, the Art Deco is celebrated with the Empire State and Chrysler buildings. In San Francisco, they revere the Golden Gate Bridge. In Miami, however, Art Deco is human-scaled and accessible everywhere. It is, according to many experts, easier to see and appreciate Art Deco design in Miami Beach than anywhere else in the U.S.
