In 1884, Bryant Park was given its name, but it was a gathering place for city dwellers long before it was monikered. The area was designated public property in 1686, by New York Colonial Governor Thomas Dongan. As the city grew and expanded, streets were designed to grid around the area, and slowly but surely, even lasting through the Civil War, the place that allowed people to come together, relax, enjoy the sun and play, grew to “a prime example of a park.” The park has since remained a coveted piece of property for New Yorkers. It has received awards for its neighborhood success and spawned many outdoor activities for residents and visitors to enjoy.

One such event, for you to enjoy during your Bluegreen vacation to Manhattan, is the
HBO Bryant Park Summer Film Festival. On Monday evenings, from June 20, 2011 through August 22, 2011, the park will host viewings of the classics. Thousands of people gather to enjoy the outdoors, company of others and the films on the 20-foot by 40-foot, outdoor movie screen. The playlist for 2011 includes greats such as
One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest,
Easy Rider,
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,
Cool Hand Luke and
Dirty Harry.
The Bryant Park Summer Film Festival is a New York City tradition, and people who love the experience arrive at the park as early as 4 p.m. to get the good seats. If you are one of the many who plan to arrive early, pack a blanket and some snacks, and enjoy the setting sun and influx of people while you watch classic animation clips, courtesy of Warner Bros. The film will start at dusk.

Be aware of what you bring though, as safety precautions prohibit a variety of common park carry-ons, such as chairs, tables, tarps, bags or dogs. Pack lightly and be ready for a great time. Even if it’s just you that attends the Bryant Park Summer Film Festival, you’ll be entertained by other attendees who share a love of film, city activity and outdoor venues. If it’s the entire family, you will all enjoy the time spent together in the middle of the city’s historic park.
If you’re interested in attending one of the showings during your Bluegreen vacation to New York City, check the Bryant Park website for the calendar. Bryant Park is approximately three miles from The Manhattan Club. You can cab, bus, bike or walk the route down 6
th Ave. to get there.
