BG Freebies: New Orleans

New Orleans is sometimes referred to as a European city on a po’boy budget. Po’boys, succulent deep-fried shrimp, oyster or fish sub sandwiches, are the best sub sandwiches in the world. These warm, scrumptious and overstuffed sandwiches give you the most bang for your buck when it comes to good eats. The hot, crispy, perfectly breaded and seasoned pieces of meat are so abundant, they can fall from their bread and lettuce homes before they reach your mouth, forcing you to pile them back on top and attempt even bigger bites. They take time and dedication to get through, and, if you can’t tell by the name, won’t cost you a lot. And that’s what we like about these Louisiana sandwiches, they are chock full of good stuff and wont cost you an arm and a leg.

And because we here at Bluegreen like to save you arms, legs, kidneys and firstborns, we have put together a few ideas of things for you to do during your New Orleans vacation. Because the city is packed full (like the po’boy) of good things, from history to art, music and personality, there is always something abuzz and there are always things to see – for free.

BG Freebies: New OrleansJackson Square
Swing by this part of the French Quarter and take a tour of the artwork set out by the 20 artists who call the street their studio. The streets have been sectioned off to allow pedestrians to freely cross from side to side and shop the various antique, novelty, art and chocolate shops. It’s a beautiful area to spend a day strolling through or sitting amongst, drinking tea and listening to the city.

The Warehouse District
This area is always alive with art shows and street performances. You will find eclectic paintings, beautiful photographs, musicians, mines and fortunetellers here. Aptly monikered the New Orleans Arts District, there are over 25 galleries in the area, most of which are on Julia Street.

This park is the perfect place to go to get a bit of history on the city. The park, operated by the U.S. Department of the Interior, offers plenty of ranger-led demonstrations, walks and talks, as well as film showings and live music. It is completely free.

These are just a few of the places you can go in this city to acquire some free entertainment. New Orleans is so full of life, activity and history, its nearly bursting at the seams, making free entertainment plentiful. If you’re in the midst of planning your New Orleans vacation, make sure you stop by these places. Seeing these areas will give you more of an understanding of what this colorful city is all about.
