We've met our share of dangerously clever limo drivers, awe struck tourists, high-rollers in cheap suits and dress-to-impress twenty-somethings. We've tried our luck at every blackjack table on the Strip and shook hands with the most famous one-armed bandits in Glitter Gulch. Tom Jones has even called us pussycats. We've won, we've lost, we've laughed and we've cried — and we've done all of these Vegas activities in just one night.
Play the Strip.
There’s only one way to win the heart of Vegas—play the Strip. It will not sleep, even if you do. And it will always, always be ready for whatever your heart desires. The best way to acquaint yourself is to take a walk down Las Vegas Boulevard, checking out the popular mega-resorts like
Mandalay Bay and
Caesars Palace, but also the smaller ones (where limits are lower), like O’ Sheas and Slots-A-Fun.
Visit Downtown.
Just a few miles north of the Strip you’ll find historic casinos and, yes, lower limits when it comes to blackjack, poker, craps, roulette and more. Gaming experts say you have a higher chance of winning downtown, away from the expensive glitz of the Strip.
For cards, try your hand at Texas Hold ‘Em. Poker is all the rage in Las Vegas, and it’s one of the few games where the house doesn’t have the advantage. For slots, play MegaBucks. If you’re going to play, play big. On a progressive slot machine, the jackpot just keeps going up until someone wins it—meaning it could hit at $500 or it could hit at $35 million. Machines can be found at most Strip casinos. If you bet on sports, the Sports Book at the Las Vegas Hilton is the original super sports book, and an energizing place to cheer for your team.
The Shopaholic Fashion Show.
This is the only free standing mall on the Strip (meaning it’s not attached to any casino) and it’s in a category of its own in more ways than one. At 2 million square feet there are more than 200 stores and restaurants, with flagships such as Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdale’s Home offering a plethora of Vegas activities for you and your loved ones.
The Grand Canal Shoppes at the Venetian.
It’s like shopping in Venice, right down to the gondolas that float through the middle of the thoroughfare. Shops range from standard to high end and include Lladro, Movado, Jimmy Choo and more.
Las Vegas Premium Outlets.
Calling all bargain hunters! This is not your typical outlet center. Stores include Coach, Dolce and Gabbana, Kenneth Cole, Theory and more than 140 others, all in an outdoor setting.
The Foodie Burger Bar.
Hubert Keller (of Fleur de Lys fame) elevates the hamburger to new levels, using top-notch meat (Kobe beef, buffalo, turkey and more) and clever toppings (foie gras and lobster, for starters). Located at Mandalay Place.
Bouchon.
Thomas Keller’s bistro actually serves one of the best breakfasts in Las Vegas. From the brioche and bread pudding French toast to the white sausage with scrambled eggs, it’s a great way to sample the famed chef’s food at a fraction of the cost of dinner. Located at the Venetian.
Mon Ami Gabi.
The delicious steak and frites are rivaled only by the view. Perched across the street from the Bellagio’s fountains, diners at this French bistro are treated to the romantic show throughout their meal. Located at Paris.
Emeril’s New Orleans Fish House.
Emeril Lagasse kicks it up a notch with this seafood restaurant. From seared scallops and Gulf shrimp to pecan-crusted Texas redfish, Located at MGM Grand.
The Buffet at Bellagio.
What trip to Vegas is complete without hitting a buffet? If you’re going to go to one, make it Bellagio’s. With Japanese, Chinese, Italian, American and seafood options, this spread is king of the buffet kingdom and must top the list of your Vegas activities.
