Bluegreen Visits the St. Augustine Amphitheater

One of the advantages of travelling to a city - even a small one – is that you can check the special events calendar for dates you’ll be in town during your Bluegreen vacation.  St. Augustine offers a fantastic venue for live performances, films and more:  the St. Augustine Amphitheater.

Located on the famous A1A highway, the amphitheater’s schedule offers a nice mix of things to do and see in an outdoor setting.

A farmer’s market happens every Saturday from 8:30 to 12:30.  There’s no admission charge to this popular weekly happening which introduces residents and visitors to local farmers and crafters.  Fresh fruits, veggies, honey and other delectable goods (including organic) will tempt you at this old city farmers market, and sometimes there’s live entertainment.

Bluegreen Visits the St. Augustine Amphitheater For big-name entertainers, however, check the concert schedule for shows during your Bluegreen vacation.  This year, headline acts at the St. Augustine Amphitheater include Wiz Khalifa, Alison Krauss, and Selena Gomez.  Whatever your musical cup of tea, the amphitheater’s schedule is likely to have at least one tempting show.  Compare your Bluegreen vacation dates to the calendar of acts.

Moviegoers will have a blast on nights dubbed Night Owl Cinemas.  How can you beat free, outdoor movies?   Gates open at 6:30 pm, and movies start at 8:00 pm.

One cautionary note:  parking on-site is very limited, so satellite parking has been established in three locations within a mile of the theater.  A GPS will make parking easy:  lots are located at the Elks Lodge, at RB Hunt Elementary, and the soccer field behind the school.  A shuttle runs from all three locations to the theater.  It’s important not to park in the residential neighborhoods surrounding the amphitheater:  if you do, you will likely get a ticket, or your vehicle could get towed. If you have questions about directions, ask your Bluegreen concierge at Grande Villas at World Golf Village for advice.

The amphitheater was built in 1965 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the city.  It’s sited within the 14 acre Anastasia Park, former home to a limestone quarry that provided stone for building projects across the city, including the landmark Castillo de San Marcos.

4100 concertgoers can enjoy an event at once, and a recent five-year refurbishment courtesy of St. Johns County dramatically upgraded the whole setting. If you’re going to attend a show there, it’s not necessary to eat before hand.  A concession stand sells all sorts of food, from pizza, nachos and burgers to turkey wraps and BBQ sandwiches. Beer and cocktails are available.

If you want to enhance your St. Augustine Bluegreen vacation with a terrific live performance of some kind, be sure to check out the calendar at the amphitheater.  Your favorite band or touring show could be there when you’d most enjoy them!
