St. Augustine Travel Guide

District Guide

Steeped in history, St. Augustine, Florida, the county seat of St. John’s, Florida, is actually considered the oldest European-established city in the continental United States. St. Augustine was founded by Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, and the city’s Spanish origins are still visible today in its Spanish Colonial architecture and its charming cobblestone streets. St. Augustine is a must visit during any trip to Florida.

Historic District

St. Augustine’s delightful historic district if filled with unique shops, pleasant cafes and delicious restaurants. However, what is more impressive is the number of historic sites found in this area. After all, it is called the historic district. The Castillo de San Marcos National Monument stands as a reminder of the city’s early Spanish rule. The monument itself actually took 23 years to build. Also of interest in the historic district is Fort Matanzas. Built between 1740 and 1742, this fort served as a watchtower to observe any approaching enemy ships. History buffs won’t want to miss the Lightner Museum, one of many museums in the area. This eclectic museum features decorative arts, furnishings, stained glass, Victorian collectibles and costumes and even a few shrunken heads! Also located in this area is Flagler College, a prestigious college located in what was once the Ponce de Leon, Henry Flagler's first St. Augustine hotel. Henry Flagler was an American tycoon and real estate promoter who played a large role in the development of Eastern Florida.

Saint George Street

Located in St. Augustine’s historic downtown district, Saint George Street has it all—shops, restaurants and attractions! First and foremost is the Colonial Spanish Quarter. This quaint pedestrian mall is reminiscent of the old world. The homes and shops are reproductions of what one would have seen centuries ago. Visitors can meet street performers who are eager to talk about what life was like in colonial times. Also located on Saint George Street is the Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse. This national treasure is believed to be the oldest surviving wooden schoolhouse in North America. Take a tour to look inside a typical 18th-century day. If you’re looking for a good scare, meet on Saint George Street for the Ghost Tours of St. Augustine. This spooky tour will recount the region’s best ghost stories and will answer all of your supernatural questions!

Anastasia State Park & Surrounding Area

The Anastasia State Recreation Area and the surrounding area is the perfect place for hiking nature trails, for camping and for participating in water sports. Near this area visitors will find the St. Augustine Alligator Farm. If you want to get an up close and personal look at this reptilian resident of Florida, bring the whole family to this farm. If you’re in need of a stiff drink after a close encounter with an alligator, stop by the Gypsy Cab Company Bar & Grill. The menu is diverse, and the prices are reasonable. This area is also where visitors will find the Anastasia Inn, one of the city’s most charming hotels. This top-rated hotel is just a mere mile from the Anastasia State Park.

Ponte Vedra Beach

Ponte Vedra Beach is located about 27 miles north on St. Augustine directly along the coast. Much like St. Augustine, this area is known for its lovely beaches and outdoor activities. The Guana River State Park offers visitors fascinating sand dunes, magnificent wildlife and the perfect setting for bird watching, fishing or boating. The golfer in your family won’t want to miss the beautiful greens at the Tournament Players Club. Each spring this club hosts the prestigious Players Championship, and the public can enjoy the two challenging courses that are available. If you still haven’t had your fill of golf, check out the Ponte Vedra Golf & Country Club at Sawgrass. The wooded fairways and the Florida palms make for a beautiful setting. Also located in Ponte Vedra Beach is the Fresh Market. This gourmet market is stocked with fresh produce, meats, seafood, cheeses, baked goods and hard-to-find-items. It is definitely worth the drive outside the city.

Ormond Beach

Ormond Beach, located about 50 miles south of St. Augustine, is another haven for golf players. The area boasts the Oceanside Golf & Country Club, the first golf course in the area. The course is located just across Highway A1A from the Atlantic Ocean—what a perfect setting. Also situated in Ormond Beach is the Halifax Plantation. The courses at this semi-private golf club are very challenging. Last but certainly not least is the Riviera Country Club. This club has been attracting local golfers for decades, but the course is no cake walk.
