Daytona Beach Kennel Club and Poker Room: Fun for the Whole Family

The words Daytona Beach usually brings to mind are cars and motorcycles. But visit the Daytona Beach Kennel Club and Poker Room and your whole group will happily think Daytona has gone to the dogs. The club also sports a popular poker room, which holds daily, weekly and featured tournaments.

Kids and adults love to watch the high-adrenaline greyhound races held at this nice public club on the west side of Daytona. The betting windows are inside, and $2 minimum bets make gambling on the dogs affordable for any adult. The action takes place just outside the big picture windows on a beautifully groomed race course.

Greyhounds are, of course, known for their speed. These extremely lightweight dogs are both graceful and strong beyond their size. Both gentle and extremely intelligent, they can run in excess of 59 feet per second as their long, powerful legs carrying them toward the finish line. Bleachers give a good vantage point for each race, but hugging the fence will be extra exciting for some – including kids – where the speed of these magnificent creatures is most felt as they whiz past.

Pick up a program when you arrive and spend a little time with it. You’ll be able to see what types of finishes each dog has had in previous races, as well as on what type of track and its length. Special notes regarding particular strengths and weaknesses will also assist your wager-making. There’s no law, however, that says you can’t just bet on a name you like.

You can bet on any dog to win, place or show, meaning coming in first, second or third. While the betting windows are open prior to each race, you can see the odds change on the large scoreboard across the dog track, based on bets which have been placed. Some bettors prefer to bet on the higher-paying longshots as opposed to the favorites, which pay less when they win.

A program will also explain the more unusual betting options like quinella (choose the first two finishers, in any order) or a trifecta (choosing first, second and third in the exact order) or a box (in which the three selected dogs can finish in any order within the top three slots). Do your homework and you may break even or take home a little extra cash. But losing $2 bets on each race still makes for a very affordable and fun evening. If the ponies are more your thing, a large room simulcasts horse races from around the globe, with betting available to you.

Daytona Beach Kennel Club and Poker Room offers loads of parking, and golf carts circle the parking lot, ready to take you to the action. There’s also affordable dining on site, and cocktails are available throughout the club.
