Kickoff your Myrtle Beach vacation with the Grand Strand’s biggest and most popular summer event, the Sun Fun Festival. Thousands of Bluegreen vacationers flock annually to the longest running event in Myrtle Beach area history. The free festival kicks off the Sun Fun Summer of Celebration, running from June through September each year. During two days in early June, visitors can enjoy live entertainment, competitions, live music concerts, and games designed for all ages.

At the Sun Fun Festival, you will enjoy free live entertainment, professional sporting events, and the best family fun crafts and art projects around. Watch young ladies full of aspiration compete in the Miss Sun Fun/Teen and Miss Bikini Wahine Pageant. Sample a multitude of food vendors and rub elbows at the popular Celebrity Meet-and-Greets. Kids can get in on the fun at the Free Kid’s Zone. Your eyes will brighten up during the laser light Shows.

In 1951, the Grand Strand area celebrated the beginning of the tourist season with the inaugural Sun Fun Festival. Visitors on a trip to Myrtle Beach were drawn to the parades and family events down at the Pavilion. The “Human Checker Board” games highlighted the first festival. A local law was enacted, stirring enthusiasm for the event, which required everyone to wear shorts or a bathing suit. The law turned out to be a “good” thing for the beachfront community. The funds collected were put towards the building of the area’s first hospital, Ocean View Memorial Hospital. The first Miss South Carolina pageant joined the festival in 1952. After years of having Hawaiian Tropic Sun Tan Lotions sponsor the event, the festival now includes Miss Sun Fun and Miss Bikini Wahine pageants. Miss Sun Fun and Miss Bikini Wahine serve as representatives of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce and area businesses during their reign.

The Sun Fun Festival, held at Grand Park next to The Market Common, was federally trademarked by the Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce. The family fun summer vacation festival is consistently chosen as one of the Southeast Tourism Society’s Top 20 Events each year. With 40,000 attendees expected, the Sun Fun Festival will surely turn out to be one of the greatest Myrtle Beach events of the summer season.
