Dwight and Maie Bartlett Heard founded the Phoenix museum in 1929, which serves as a means to educate visitors and locals alike about the cultures and arts that define Native American history. The Heard Museum is stocked with Southwest Indian artifacts and rare works of art. The living museum has expanded and grown over the years, and has recently earned international recognition for the quality and relevance of its collections. Local American Indian artists and a variety of tribal communities offer first-hand accounts that are reflected in the displays and exhibits.

Currently, Bluegreen vacationers can view a massive collection of over 40,000 items. This includes a 34,000-volume library and archives. The museum covers about 130,000 square feet, housing pop art images, southwest Indian artifacts, and flawless pieces of art depicting the history of this storied culture. Contemporary American Indian artists showcase pop art images of Wonder Woman, Michael Jackson and President Obama in a flashy new exhibit, Popular Culture in American Indian Art.

Outside the museum overlooking the Sonoran Desert, visitors can retreat to the courtyards to enjoy cascading water features and rousing sculptures. Take a front row seat to live music and dance performances at the Scott L. Libby, Jr. Amphitheater. Get hands-on and grab the chance to form butterflies and create wearable art inside the museum. The HOME: Native People in the Southwest is one of the most popular exhibits, showcasing the background and development of the major tribes of the Southwest Region.
