Looking for a beautiful blend of art sculptures and nature during your Bluegreen vacation to
Myrtle Beach? Spend a day at
Brookgreen Gardens, a true gem located in the Grand Strand. Nestled between Myrtle Beach and Pawleys Island, the national historic landmark covers more than 9,000 sprawling acres of South Carolina lowcountry. Themed gardens run throughout the wildlife preserve, which also houses a lowcountry zoo and several trails for back road tours.
Brookgreen Gardens was the first sculpture garden built in the nation. In 1931, founders Archer and Anna Hyatt opened the garden, which sits on the site of four former rice plantations and is within close proximity to all Bluegreen resorts in Myrtle Beach. American sculptors are given a breathtaking outdoor canvas to show their masterpieces. More than 1200 works by more than 350 sculptors are on display throughout the grounds. Anna Hyatt built the collection around her own work, and now the group of sculptures scales back to the early nineteenth century and extends through this century.
Each year, Brookgreen Gardens offer a variety of exhibitions and excursions that vary by season. This year, the new Butterfly House showcases hundreds of the Southeast’s most colorful friends. Walk the Lowcountry Trail to traverse the thousands of acres of South Carolina lowcountry, discovering the varied wildlife that exist along the way. Enjoy a ride on the boat or vehicle excursions available during your visit, including a cruise along the water on a 48-foot pontoon boat. Tour the back roads of the Oaks plantation while a guide narrates the history of rice culture in the South Carolina region. On this historical journey, learn the remarkable story of early South Carolina Governor Joseph Alston, who was married to Theodosia, the daughter of Vice-President Aaron Burr.

In addition, the nature and historical preserve houses a small zoo to enjoy during your Bluegreen vacation. Here’s your chance to grapple with the alligators, bald eagles, wild turkeys and grey foxes that roam around the Lowcountry Zoo. This zoo is the only one accredited by the
Association of Zoos and Aquariums on the coast of the Carolinas. The spectacular Brookgreen Gardens showcases the finest outdoor collection of American figurative sculptures. Grab the chance to discover the beauty of South Carolina lowcountry on your next Bluegreen vacation!
